TEN STEPS TO GETTING YOUR HUNTING DOG IN SHAPE

By Bob West

Proper conditioning and feeding can make a big difference in your dog’s performance. A sound, healthy dog in top shape feels better, hunts harder, and lasts much longer in the field.

When your dog is in top shape he is far more attentive to the work at hand and, in turn, produces more game for the table.

Follow these 10 steps and you’ll have an eager, healthy hunting partner.

TIP #1

See your veterinarian for a thorough check-up before beginning preseason training and endurance work.

TIP #2

Choose a high energy and protein diet for active dogs. Hunting dogs burn more calories than less active dogs, so it’s important to select a specially-designed dog food. Purina brand Hi Pro is an excellent choice because it has high energy and protein in a 100 percent complete and balanced dog food.

TIP #3

Provide good clean water during feeding and small water breaks during workouts. Water is the most important nutrient dog owners need to provide their dogs.

TIP #4

Allow conditioning time six to eight weeks is the minimum to get your dog into condition.

TIP #5

Short workouts at five to 10 minutes of hard work a day are best for starters. Build slowly to an hour or more.

TIP #6

Water workouts help to avoid heat stress, especially during late summer and early fall -- depending on your geographic location.

TIP #7

A total conditioning program must include all muscle groups and the cardiovascular system for a general conditioning of the dog. With the upland hunting dog there must be a blend of swimming, field and road work.

TIP #8

Runs in field areas are very helpful to develop stamina. Even better results are gained through the use of a harness with weights especially designed to be safe for dogs.

TIP #9

Combine training with your exercise program for best results. Use your imagination as you progress: any form of exercise is beneficial. Variety helps make exercise times more enjoyable for you and your dog.

TIP #10

Enjoy results. By the end of the first month, you should see improvement in both physique and performance. By the end of your second month, you’ll realize that all the work has been worthwhile.

If you follow a regimen including improved diet, training and exercise, you will have set yourself and your dog far above the average hunting team afield. Your rewards will be many quality hunting experiences with your dog.
