AKC:
American Kennel Club.
Automatic strike dog: One that barks as soon as turned loose in a competitive event.
B-
Babbler:
A dog that barks as soon as it is released even when there is no scent or track.
Backtrack: Following a raccoon track in the wrong direction.
Barks per minute: Amount of barks during each minute of treeing.
Bawl:
The long drawn out howl of a coonhound.
Bay: The bawl or bark that a coonhound uses when it has game cornered on the ground.
Bench- a small table used to stack hound on to be shown in a Bench Show.Bitch: A female canine.
Blanketback: A dog that has a black or nearly black back, like a blanket.
Bloodline: Dogs pedigree.
Breaking scent: Scent of unwanted game that is used to break dog form running that particular animal.
Broke: A dog that will chase raccoons and nothing else.
Brood bitch: A female used mainly for producing pups.
Brucellosis: Veneral disease that is caused by bacteria. It lives in the female's uterus and vagina and in the male's seamen and testicles. Dogs should be tested before breeding. It is a contagious veneral disease among dogs.
Box dog,(rig dog):
Dog that will ride on top of the dog box in the back of the truck and strike on game. Usually on bear.
C-
Caged coon: A live raccoon in a cage used to help train coonhound puppies.
Changeover: The change in a coonhounds bark when it stops trailing and starts treeing.
Check in: A dog that will range out looking for a track then come back to you when none is found.
Check dog: One that is a broke dog and will come back to the hunter if other dogs are chasing off-game. Used when training pups.
Chop:
Short bark, usually tree barking. Some coonhounds chop on trail also.
Close hunter: A dog that hunts within 100 yards of you. This becomes more desirable the older you get!
Cold nosed: Referring to a dog that works old tracks.
Cur: Tree dogs other than coonhounds.
Catch dog: A dog that is used to physically catch game. Mostly used in wild pig hunting.
Cat foot: In a dog referring to a short-toed, round foot with the knuckles high and well developed. Like a cat's foot.
D-
Dam: Female parent.
Dew claws: The false toe and claw on the forelegs of dogs.
Dog Box- Box built to go in back of truck for dog to travel in safely. (Similar to a dog crate)
Drop: a place to hunt, to hunt
Dropped: Send dog hunting, i.e. we dropped a couple dogs in the section
E-
Ear canker: Infection of dog's inner ear. 
Ear mites: Tiny insects that cause itching and inflammation in the inner ear of dog's.
F-
Finished:
Can mean either a fully trained dog , or a Grand Nite Champion.
Freeze brand: Branding method that permanently turns dark hair light.
Full Cry: A hound that is hot on a scent trail and is fully open. Also the name of the oldest trail and tree dog magazine.
Fully open: While on a scent trail, barking freely.
G-
Gator- one that frequently fights with other dogs.
Grade dog- hound that has no registered papers.

Grand Nite Champion:
Title earned in UKC competitions.
Gyp: A female coonhound.
H-
Handler:
Person responsible for a dog in competition.
Heart worm: - parasitic worm that lives in dog's heart. Preventable with medication.
Hide hunter: Person who hunts raccoons for the fur.
Hot nose:
Used to describe dog that will only work a fresh track that was recently made.
I-
Independent: A dog that works alone rather than as part of a pack.
Instant strike: Dog that opens at the slightest scent. Often confused with a babbler.
J-
Judge:
Person keeping time and recording scores in field trials.
Junk: Any game other that raccoons, also off game or trash.
L-
Lay up:
A raccoon that has been up in a tree for an extended period.
Loose mouth: A dog that barks a lot.
Locate: Finding the tree that the game is in. Also the announcement of the tree by the dog. Some dogs may run bawl mouth on track, change for their locate, and then chop on tree.
Loose mouth: Opens for no reason, without smelling any scent.
N-
Nite Champion:
Title earned in UKC competitions.
Nite Hunt: Competition for coonhounds.
O-
Off game: Anything other than raccoons, also junk or trash.
Open: The announcement by a dog that a track has been located.
Open Mouthed: Dog that barks excessive on track
P-
Pup trainer: A straight, good natured coonhound that will allow pups to join in the hunt for raccoons.
Pressure tree dog: Dog that will stay treed until you arrive at the tree. Will not leave the tree for any reason. Will stand the pressure of other dogs barking nearby.
Pup trainer: Older dog that is hunted with the pup so the pup can learn from doing.
Purple Ribbon bred: United Kennel club classification of a dog that has at least three generations of registered ancestors.
S-
Scent drag:
A drag made of cloth or canvas with scent on it and dragged across the ground to lay a scent trail for training or competitive events.
Scratched- dogs that are scratched are eliminated from a hunt.
Shining- the act of searching a tree with lights to find the raccoon is simply referred to as shining.
Shock collar: An electronic collar used to discipline coonhounds.
Silent: A coonhound that does not bark on trail.
Sire: Male parent
Slick tree: When the dog trees at the tree and there is no game in that tree.
Split Tree- when dogs tree on separate trees from one another, it is referred to as being split treed.
Straight: A dog that chases raccoons only
Strike: The first bark that a coonhound lets out when a track is found.
Squalling- a sound made either by one’s own voice or by mechanical means that imitates a coon in distress. The sound is considered very helpful in locating coons while shining a tree.
T-
Tight mouth: Does not open much on track.
Track: Scent trail left by game animal.
Track drifter:
A coonhound that only needs to check the track in spots and can keep moving on a raccoon trail.
Track straddler: Follows the trail by smelling every step the game made.
Tracking collar: A collar with a radio transmitter used to locate coonhounds when out of hearing or not barking.
Training scent: Scent of game used to lay a trail, used in training and competition events.
Tree, treed:
To sit at the base of a tree and bark up.
U-
UKC:
United Kennel Club, registry for coonhounds.
W-
Wide hunter:
A coonhound that searches wide areas ( sometimes miles ) looking for raccoon tracks.

Ill dog: One that frequently fights with other dogs.
Junk game: Unwanted game.
