What is Dog Talk?
When I was searching for a title for this manual, it occurred to me that the
best title was based off of what this training is all about. I have been
asked, time and time again, how I get my dogs to respond the way they do. In
the introduction, you notice that all the dogs I've used over the years grew
up in this kennel or in my yard. This applies to every one of them,
regardless of what I used them for. Now this in itself isn't the thing that
makes for the success of the dogs. When you stop to analyze what goes on
while you are around a dog, on a daily basis, the answer to success is right
there in front of your eyes. The problem with most folks is that they don't
see the reason for their success or the reason for their failures.
Basically, the same answer is responsible for both end results. If you do
what is outlined in this manual, you will be successful and if you don't,
you won't.
The title, "DOG TALK", is exactly what this training is all about and is
exactly what you have to learn to do, if you want to "build" a dog that you
will remember for the rest of your life. When I use the term "build" I mean,
all, the daily, weekly, monthly and yearly work that goes into having a
successful dog. What I mean when I say "DOG TALK" is exactly that. You have
to learn to talk to your dog, from very young on, to establish the
foundation to build on. I believe in this philosophy with all my heart and
believe that without it, you might have a dog that will work out, but it
will probably be in spite of you instead of because of you. In all
likelihood, your memories of a lifetime won't be based off of the
experiences you had with this dog.
I am going to provide very detailed instructions pertaining to how to go
about this. In addition to the instructions, I am going to provide you the
reasons it works. When we are done, you will not only know how to apply this
knowledge to help you train your dog and all future dogs, you will find the
reasons you had problems in the past. This is very powerful stuff we're
talking about here. Once you recognize what has gone wrong in the past, it
is easier to avoid those circumstances in the future.
Even after training has taken place, there will still be those nights when
the dog makes a mistake. This in itself isn't that uncommon. The trick is to
not lose your cool and make a situation worse. If you know the tricks, you
can react the same every time and feel confident that what you do is the
right thing and not something that will make the situation worse. Granted,
you will have to change your techniques on occasion because of the
disposition of some dogs, but the principles apply, regardless, it's just
the way you carry them out that changes.
When I use the term "DOG TALK" I mean one specific thing. Another term for
this would be "VOICE TRAINING". What this means is that a dog needs to have
some very basic training where he learns to respect your voice and the
different tones of voice that you use. There is a specific tone of voice
that you need to use when you correct your dog and another when you praise
your dog. Remember this. You will hear these terms used time and time again,
in all my training material. When you use the correct tone of voice, at the
right time, it is extremely effective as long as you have "built" a dog that
will respond.
